DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN was launched in 2012. Utilizing the expertise DESCENTE has accumulated over many years of sportswear development, ALLTERRAIN products highlight “pure craftsmanship” uninfluenced by age, scene, or trends.
All these products, including the iconic MIZUSAWA DOWN and hard shell jackets, are created under the concept of “Form Follows Function,” meaning every design element has a reason and a function.
DESCENTE has merged on-trend style with craftsmanship honed through the development of high performance sportswear in collaboration with the world’s top athletes.
Two new categories, “DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN 81” and “DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN I/O,” were launched in 2023.
MIZUSAWA DOWN is the product that remarkably launched DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN. Never before in DESCENTE’s long experience has one single garment so dramatically evolved into a whole product category. This highly functional down jacket, with its minimal yet striking appearance, is made using advanced technology and a distinctive integrated production system at the DESCENTE APPAREL Mizusawa Factory located in the town formerly known as Mizusawa, but now as Oshu, in Iwate Prefecture, in the northern part of Japan’s main island. The special technology and accumulated know-how at the Mizusawa Factory led to the birth of MIZUSAWA DOWN.
The development of MIZUSAWA DOWN began with resolving the issue of water seeping through the seams of down jackets, wetting the down and reducing insulation. To overcome this, seams were eliminated and instead, a unique thermal bonding technique was developed to form the down pack. In areas where sewn seams were necessary, such as sleeves, tape was applied to seal the seams, thus creating new value with “waterproof” and “water-resistant” properties.
Each step, from cutting to forming the down pack, thermal bonding, and filling the down, is meticulously crafted by experienced artisans.
Since its emergence in 2008, MIZUSAWA DOWN has continued to evolve, and enjoys a worldwide fan base that appreciates its unparalleled functionality which is different from traditional down jackets.
